About The Withlacoochee - Gulf Area

GEOGRAPHY      wpe4.jpg (6696 bytes)

The Withlacoochee - Gulf Area, "the Pride of the Nature Coast", is located in Levy County on the central west coast of Florida, about 2 hours north of Tampa and St. Petersburg.  The Gulf of Mexico is to our west, the Gulf Hammock Wildlife Management area is to the north, Citrus County is to the south. Although we do have some beaches, our coast is not the typical white sand beaches that people expect of Florida.   We have a salt marsh estuary buffer zone which provides the perfect area for sea life, fowl, and wild animals to live, breed and spawn. Also unique is the topography of the gulf. In our area the depth of the water only increases  about one foot for every mile off shore that you go, as opposed to the deep water directly off the beach like elsewhere in Florida. The Withlacooche River "an Outstanding Florida Waterway" is one of the deepest rivers from the Anclote River to our south to the St. Marks to our north. This  provides quick deep water access to the Gulf of Mexico, but still allows you to store your boat in fresh water.

Education       wpe2.jpg (8455 bytes)

We are very fortunate in the Yankeetown and Inglis area to have the Yankeetown School covering from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. The facilities at the school are very progressive and are current. High schools in Crystal River and Dunnellon serve grades 9th to 12th. Central Florida Community College,  the University of Florida and the Withlacoochee Technical Institute are all a reasonable commute.

Services      wpe2.jpg (13881 bytes)

The Withlacoochee Gulf Area is served by a wide variety of doctors in the immediate area.  Seven Rivers Community Hospital is only a 10 minute drive. The emergency medical service is advanced life support with local paramedics stationed in Yankeetown and Inglis. Both towns support Volunteer Fire Departments. Law enforcement is provided by the Levy County Sheriff Department and the Inglis Police Department. There are two banks and numerous churches. If you like dining out, we run the the gauntlet of restaurants.  A shopping center with a full service grocery store meets the needs of the community.

Leisure Time      wpe2.jpg (10254 bytes)

Hunting and fishing are excellent as you might expect from a nature oriented area.  Nature walks and bike trails are numerous. SCUBA diving, snorkling, sailing, water skiing and boating of all types are never far away. Excellent golf courses and tennis courts are only a short drive away. We also have two of Florida's Premier Fine dinning establishments The Izaak Walton Lodge and December's
